They said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city with a tower whose top reaches to the heavens. And let us make a name for ourselves, otherwise we be scattered across the surface of the whole earth.”


When the people saw that Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron, and said to him, “Come, you must gods for us, which will go before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we don’t know what has become of him.”


The tree grew and was strong. Its height reached to the sky and its sight to the end of all the earth.


Yet I destroyed the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and he was strong as the oaks; yet I destroyed his fruit from above, and his roots from beneath.


They went up by the South, and came to Hebron; and Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were there. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)


You are to speak to the children of Israel, and tell them, “When y’all cross over the Jordan into the land of Canaan,


Where can we go? Our brothers have made our heart melt, saying, ‘The people are greater and taller than we are. The cities are great and fortified up to the sky. We have even seen the sons of the Anakim there!’”


then YHWH will drive out all these nations before y’all, and y’all will drive out nations greater and mightier than y’all.


For y’all are to pass over the Jordan to go in take possession of the land that YHWH your* God is giving y’all, and y’all are to possess it and live in it.


On the day when y’all pass over the Jordan to the land which YHWH your God is giving you, that you are to set up great stones and coat them with plaster.


At that time, I commanded y’all, saying, “YHWH y’all’s God has given y’all this land to take possession it. Y’all men of valor are to cross over before y’all’s brothers, the children of Israel, equipped for battle.


“Now, Israel, listen to the statutes and to the ordinances which I teach y’all to do, so that y’all may live and go in and take possession of the land which YHWH, the God of y’all’s ancestors, is giving y’all.


to drive out nations from before you greater and mightier than you, to bring you in, to give you their land for an inheritance, as it is today.


When YHWH your God brings you into the land which ʜᴇ swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give you, great and splendid cities which you didn’t build,


When YHWH your God brings you into the land where you go to possess it, and casts out many nations before you—the Hittite, the Girgashite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite—seven nations greater and mightier than you;


“Y’all go through the middle of the camp, and command the people, saying, ‘Y’all prepare provisions. In three days, y’all are to pass over the Jordan and go in to possess the land which YHWH y’all’s God is giving y’all to possess.’”


until YHWH has given your* siblings rest, as ʜᴇ has given y’all, and they too have possessed the land that YHWH y’all’s God is giving them. Then y’all are to return to the land of y’all’s possession and possess it, which Moses the servant of YHWH gave y’all beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise.’”


Now therefore give me this hill country, of which YHWH spoke in that day; for you heard in that day how the Anakim were there, and great and fortified cities. It may be that YHWH will be with me, and I will drive them out, as YHWH said.”


So when the people left their tents to cross over the Jordan, the priests who carried the ark of the covenant went ahead of the people,


the waters coming downstream stood and rose up in one heap a great way off, at Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan. The waters flowing toward the sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, were completely cut off. Then the people passed over near Jericho.


Joshua spoke to the priests, saying, “Y’all take up the ark of the covenant and cross over ahead the people.” They took up the ark of the covenant and went ahead the people.


The people came up out of the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and encamped in Gilgal, on the east border of Jericho.


Joshua said to them, “Y’all go over in front of the ark of YHWH y’all’s God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of y’all is lift a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel.
