Then the king said to Ziba, “All that belongs to Mephibosheth is yours.” Ziba said, “I bow down. Let me find favor in your sight, my lord, O king.”


When he had come to Jerusalem to meet the king, the king said to him, “Why didn’t you go with me, Mephibosheth?”


Now Jonathan, Saul’s son, had a son who was lame in his feet. He was five years old when the news came about Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel. His nurse picked him up and fled, but as she hurried to flee, he fell and became lame. His name was Mephibosheth.


David said, “Is there yet any who is left of Saul’s house, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan’s sake?”


Till the land for him—you, your sons, and your servants. Bring in the harvest, that your master’s son may have bread to eat; but Mephibosheth your master’s son will always eat bread at my table.” Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.


Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came to David, fell on his face, and showed respect. David said, “Mephibosheth?” He answered, “Here is your servant!”


David said to him, “Don’t be afraid, for I will show-show you kindness for Jonathan your father’s sake, and will restore to you all the land of Saul your father. You will eat bread at my table continually.”


I say, “Keep the king’s command!” because of the oath to God.


Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.


Jonathan said to David, “By YHWH, the God of Israel, I will sound out my father about this time tomorrow, or the third day. If I see that he is good toward David, will I not send for you and disclose it to you?


but you must not cut off your kindness from my house forever, not even when YHWH has cut off every one of the enemies of David from the surface of the earth.”


Jonathan caused David to swear again, for the love that he had to him; for he loved him as he loved his own soul.


Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace, because we have both sworn in the name of YHWH, saying, ‘YHWH is between me and you, and between my offspring and your offspring, forever.’” Then David got up and departed, and Jonathan went into the city.


Therefore deal kindly with your servant, for you have brought your servant into a covenant of YHWH with you; but if there is iniquity in me, kill me yourself, for why should you bring me to your father?”


They both made a covenant before YHWH. Then David stayed in the woods and Jonathan went to his house.


David swore to Saul. Saul went home, but David and his men went up to the stronghold.
