23 He went up from there to Bethel. As he was going up by the way, some youths came out of the city and mocked him, and said to him, “Go up, you baldy! Go up, you baldy!”

Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, mocking.


As they were walking along and talking, suddenly, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated them; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.


Elijah said to Elisha, “Please wait here, for YHWH has sent me as far as Bethel.” Elisha said, “As YHWH lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Bethel.


So the waters were healed to this day, according to Elisha’s word which he spoke.


but they mocked the messengers of God, despised ʜɪꜱ words, and scoffed at ʜɪꜱ prophets, until YHWH’s wrath arose against ʜɪꜱ people, until there was no remedy.


Even young children despise me. If I arise, they speak against me.


“But now those who are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I considered unworthy to put with my sheep dogs.


Let me not be disappointed, YHWH, for I have called on you. Let the wicked be disappointed. Let them be silent in Sheol.


Let the lying lips be mute, which speak against the righteous insolently, with pride and contempt.


But in my adversity, they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together. The attackers gathered themselves together against me, and I didn’t know it. They tore at me, and didn’t cease.


Even a child makes himself known by his doings, whether his work is pure, and whether it is right.


Folly is bound up in the heart of a child; the rod of discipline drives it far from him.


Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.


Therefore remove sorrow from your heart, and put away evil from your flesh, for youth and the dawn of life are emptiness.


Ah sinful nation, a people loaded with iniquity, offspring of evildoers, children who deal corruptly! They have forsaken YHWH. They have despised the Holy One of Israel. They are estranged and backward.


The people will be oppressed, everyone by another, and everyone by his neighbor. The child will proudly defy the old, and the nobody against the honorable.


YHWH, you have deceived me, and I was deceived. You are stronger than I, and have prevailed. I have become a laughingstock all day. Everyone mocks me.


For as often as I speak, I cry out; I cry, “Violence and destruction!” because the word of YHWH has been made a reproach to me, and a derision, all day.


The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead the dough, to make cakes to the queen of the sky, and to pour out drink offerings to other gods, that they may provoke me to anger.


So Bethel will do to y’all because of y’all’s wicked wickedness. At daybreak the king of Israel will be destroyed-destroyed.


The inhabitants of Samaria will be in terror for the calves of Beth Aven, for its people will mourn over it, along with its priests who rejoiced over it, for its glory, because it has departed from it.


“Although you, Israel, play the prostitute, do not let Judah become guilty. And both of y’all must not go to Gilgal, nor up to Beth Aven, And y’all must not swear, ‘As YHWH lives.’


“If a man’s hair has fallen from his head, he is bald. He is clean.


“For in the day that I visit the transgressions of Israel on him, I will also visit the altars of Bethel; and the horns of the altar will be cut off, and fall to the ground.


“y’all must go to Bethel and rebel; In Gilgal, y’all are to rebel more. Bring y’all’s sacrifices every morning, y’all’s tithes every three days,


but y’all must not seek Bethel, nor enter into Gilgal, and y’all must not cross over to Beersheba; for Gilgal will be taken captive-captive, and Bethel will come to nothing.


but don’t prophesy again any more at Bethel; for it is the king’s sanctuary, and it is a royal house!”


At that time, the one who was born according to the flesh persecuted the one who was born according to the Spirit, and so it is now.


Others were tried by mocking and scourging, yes, even chains and imprisonment.
