Now these are those who came to David to Ziklag while he was a fugitive from Saul the son of Kish. They were among the mighty men, his helpers in war.


David arose and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath.


The servants of Achish said to him, “Isn’t this David the king of the land? Didn’t they sing to one another about him in dances, saying, ‘Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands?’”


David said to his men, “Each of y’all take up your sword!” Every man put on his sword. David also put on his sword. About four hundred men followed David, and two hundred stayed by the baggage.


David inquired of YHWH, saying, “If I pursue after this troop, will I overtake them?” Hᴇ answered him, “Pursue, because you will overtake-overtake and will rescue-rescue.”


So David went, he and the six hundred men who were with him, and came to the brook Besor, where those who were left behind stayed.
