4 David’s men said to him, “Look, this is the day about which YHWH said to you, ‘I will deliver your enemy into your hand, and you will do to him as it seems good to you.’” Then David arose and cut off the skirt of Saul’s robe secretly.

They brought the head of Ishbosheth to David to Hebron, and said to the king, “Look, the head of Ish-bosheth, the son of Saul, your enemy, who sought your life! YHWH has avenged my lord the king today of Saul and of his offspring.”


if the men of my tent have not said, ‘Who can find one who has not been filled with his meat?’


I cry with my voice to YHWH. With my voice, I ask YHWH for mercy.


Be merciful to me, God, be merciful to me, for my soul takes refuge in you. Yes, in the shadow of your wings, I will take refuge, until disaster has passed.


but not if it is unintentional, but God allows it to happen, then I will appoint you a place where he may flee.


David therefore departed from there and escaped to Adullam’s cave. When his brothers and all his father’s house heard it, they went down there to him.


He said to him, “Don’t be afraid, for the hand of Saul my father won’t find you. You will be king over Israel, and I will be next to you. Saul my father also knows this.”


Saul was told that David had come to Keilah. Saul said, “God has delivered him into my hand, for he is shut in by entering into a town that has gates and bars.”


Look! Today you have seen with your eyes that YHWH delivered you into my hand in the cave. Some urged me to kill you, but I spared you. I said, ‘I will not stretch out my hand against my lord, for he is YHWH’s anointed.’


You have declared today how you have dealt well with me, because when YHWH had delivered me up into your hand, you didn’t kill me.


YHWH will render to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness; because YHWH delivered you into my hand today, and I wouldn’t stretch out my hand against YHWH’s anointed.
