As he was setting out on the road, a man ran up, knelt before him, and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”


He answered them, “What did Moses command you?”


Now one of the scribes came up and heard them debating, and when he realized that Jesus had answered them well, he asked him, “Which is the most important commandment of all?”


For I tell you that many prophets and kings wished to see the things you see but did not see them, and to hear the things you hear but did not hear them.”


Jesus said to him, “What is written in the law? How do yoʋ read it?”


Then a certain ruler asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”


But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the will of God for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.)


(They said this to test him, so that they might have something to accuse him of.) But Jesus stooped down and wrote with his finger on the ground, taking no notice.


For if the inheritance comes by the law, it no longer comes by the promise; but God granted it to Abraham by a promise.
