but they kept mocking the messengers of God, despising his words, and scoffing at his prophets, till the wrath of the Lord rose against his people, till there was no remedy.


they open wide their mouths at me, like a ravening and roaring lion.


I can count all my bones— they stare and gloat over me;


All who see me mock at me, they make mouths at me, they wag their heads;


They open wide their mouths against me; they say, “Aha, Aha! our eyes have seen it!”


I am the talk of those who sit in the gate, and the drunkards make songs about me.


You are still exalting yourself against my people, and will not let them go.


Ah, sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, offspring of evildoers, sons who deal corruptly! They have forsaken the Lord, they have despised the Holy One of Israel, they are utterly estranged.


Shall the axe vaunt itself over him who hews with it, or the saw magnify itself against him who wields it? As if a rod should wield him who lifts it, or as if a staff should lift him who is not wood!


“Woe to the rebellious children,” says the Lord, “who carry out a plan, but not mine; and who make a league, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin;


For they are a rebellious people, lying sons, sons who will not hear the instruction of the Lord;


“ ‘Whom have you mocked and reviled? Against whom have you raised your voice and haughtily lifted your eyes? Against the Holy One of Israel!


Because you have raged against me and your arrogance has come to my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth, and I will turn you back on the way by which you came.’


You have never heard, you have never known, from of old your ear has not been opened. For I knew that you would deal very treacherously, and that from birth you were called a rebel.


you who burn with lust among the oaks, under every green tree; who slay your children in the valleys, under the clefts of the rocks?

Let no one deceive you with empty words, for it is because of these things that the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.


On account of these the wrath of God is coming.
