For why? I ashes eaten have like bread, in sorrows deep; My drink I also mingled have with tears that I did weep.


My hands to thee I stretch; my soul thirsts, as dry land, for thee.


My heart doth pant incessantly, my strength doth quite decay; As for mine eyes, their wonted light is from me gone away.


Yea, they that seek my life lay snares: who seek to do me wrong Speak things mischievous, and deceits imagine all day long.


My tears have unto me been meat, both in the night and day, While unto me continually, Where is thy God? they say.


If we God's name forgot, or stretch'd to a strange god our hands,


I'll pray, and make a noise At ev'ning, morning, and at noon; and he shall hear my voice.


Mine eye, consum'd with grief, grows old, Because of all mine enemies.


Those that be princes great shall then come out of Egypt lands; And Ethiopia to God shall soon stretch out her hands.


Sith unto thee I daily cry, be merciful to me.


Lord God, my Saviour, day and night before thee cry'd have I.
