Do not be among winebibbers, or among gluttonous eaters of meat;


“Come,” they say, “let us get wine; let us fill ourselves with strong drink. And tomorrow will be like today, great beyond measure.”


Hear the word of the Lord, you who tremble at his word: Your own people who hate you and reject you for my name's sake have said, “Let the Lord be glorified, so that we may see your joy”; but it is they who shall be put to shame.


You eat the fat, you clothe yourselves with the wool, you slaughter the fatlings; but you do not feed the sheep.


Thus says the Lord concerning the prophets who lead my people astray, who cry “Peace” when they have something to eat, but declare war against those who put nothing into their mouths.


But that same slave, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow slaves who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat, he said, ‘Pay what you owe.’


But if that wicked slave says to himself, ‘My master is delayed,’


the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour that he does not know.


“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.


and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now.”


For such people do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the simple-minded.


For you put up with it when someone makes slaves of you, or preys upon you, or takes advantage of you, or puts on airs, or gives you a slap in the face.


Their end is destruction; their god is the belly; and their glory is in their shame; their minds are set on earthly things.


Do not lord it over those in your charge, but be examples to the flock.


These are blemishes on your love-feasts, while they feast with you without fear, feeding themselves. They are waterless clouds carried along by the winds; autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, uprooted;


Also it was allowed to make war on the saints and to conquer them. It was given authority over every tribe and people and language and nation,


because they shed the blood of saints and prophets, you have given them blood to drink. It is what they deserve!”


And I saw that the woman was drunk with the blood of the saints and the blood of the witnesses to Jesus. When I saw her, I was greatly amazed.


Why then look with greedy eye at my sacrifices and my offerings that I commanded, and honor your sons more than me by fattening yourselves on the choicest parts of every offering of my people Israel?’
