In the time of his distress he became yet more faithless to the Lord—this same King Ahaz.


So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh, and said to him, “Thus says the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, ‘How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Let my people go, so that they may worship me.


Why do you seek further beatings? Why do you continue to rebel? The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.


Because of their wicked covetousness I was angry; I struck them, I hid and was angry; but they kept turning back to their own ways.


O Lord, do your eyes not look for truth? You have struck them, but they felt no anguish; you have consumed them, but they refused to take correction. They have made their faces harder than rock; they have refused to turn back.


Bear your disgrace, you also, for you have brought about for your sisters a more favorable judgment; because of your sins in which you acted more abominably than they, they are more in the right than you. So be ashamed, you also, and bear your disgrace, for you have made your sisters appear righteous.


in order that you may remember and be confounded, and never open your mouth again because of your shame, when I forgive you all that you have done, says the Lord God.


I will throw filth at you and treat you with contempt, and make you a spectacle.


and so I make you despised and abased before all the people, inasmuch as you have not kept my ways but have shown partiality in your instruction.


“Do not give what is holy to dogs; and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under foot and turn and maul you.


A few days later the younger son gathered all he had and traveled to a distant country, and there he squandered his property in dissolute living.


When he had spent everything, a severe famine took place throughout that country, and he began to be in need.


He would gladly have filled himself with the pods that the pigs were eating; and no one gave him anything.


But now that you have been freed from sin and enslaved to God, the advantage you get is sanctification. The end is eternal life.


For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, despicable, hating one another.
