—for they all wanted to frighten us, thinking, “Their hands will drop from the work, and it will not be done.” But now, O God, strengthen my hands.


From the city the dying groan, and the throat of the wounded cries for help; yet God pays no attention to their prayer.


Blessed be the Lord, my rock, who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle;


Rise up, O Lord, confront them, overthrow them! By your sword deliver my life from the wicked,


the God who girded me with strength, and made my way safe.


For you girded me with strength for the battle; you made my assailants sink under me.


Shall the ax vaunt itself over the one who wields it, or the saw magnify itself against the one who handles it? As if a rod should raise the one who lifts it up, or as if a staff should lift the one who is not wood!


Thus says the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped to subdue nations before him and strip kings of their robes, to open doors before him— and the gates shall not be closed:


I am the Lord, and there is no other; besides me there is no god. I arm you, though you do not know me,


Therefore the time is surely coming, says the Lord, when I will punish her idols, and through all her land the wounded shall groan.


Thus says the Lord God to Tyre: Shall not the coastlands shake at the sound of your fall, when the wounded groan, when slaughter goes on within you?


Therefore thus says the Lord God: I will give the land of Egypt to King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon; and he shall carry off its wealth and despoil it and plunder it; and it shall be the wages for his army.


Thus says the Lord God: I will put an end to the hordes of Egypt, by the hand of King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon.


He and his people with him, the most terrible of the nations, shall be brought in to destroy the land; and they shall draw their swords against Egypt, and fill the land with the slain.


Mortal, I have broken the arm of Pharaoh king of Egypt; it has not been bound up for healing or wrapped with a bandage, so that it may become strong to wield the sword.


I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, but the arms of Pharaoh shall fall. And they shall know that I am the Lord, when I put my sword into the hand of the king of Babylon. He shall stretch it out against the land of Egypt,


You also, O Ethiopians, shall be killed by my sword.
