There was nothing in the ark except the two tablets of stone that Moses had placed there at Horeb, where the Lord made a covenant with the Israelites, when they came out of the land of Egypt.


They took an oath to the Lord with a loud voice, and with shouting, and with trumpets, and with horns.


“Gather to me my faithful ones, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice!”


But they flattered him with their mouths; they lied to him with their tongues.


The people all answered as one: “Everything that the Lord has spoken we will do.” Moses reported the words of the people to the Lord.


Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: I myself made a covenant with your ancestors when I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, saying,


Whether it is good or bad, we will obey the voice of the Lord our God to whom we are sending you, in order that it may go well with us when we obey the voice of the Lord our God.”


I passed by you again and looked on you; you were at the age for love. I spread the edge of my cloak over you, and covered your nakedness: I pledged myself to you and entered into a covenant with you, says the Lord God, and you became mine.


Have we not all one father? Has not one God created us? Why then are we faithless to one another, profaning the covenant of our ancestors?


After the reading of the law and the prophets, the officials of the synagogue sent them a message, saying, “Brothers, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, give it.”


And when this letter has been read among you, have it read also in the church of the Laodiceans; and see that you read also the letter from Laodicea.


I solemnly command you by the Lord that this letter be read to all of them.


The people said to Joshua, “The Lord our God we will serve, and him we will obey.”
