On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates,


For a long time Israel was without the true God, and without a teaching priest, and without law;


But Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of families in Israel said to them, “You shall have no part with us in building a house to our God; but we alone will build to the Lord, the God of Israel, as King Cyrus of Persia has commanded us.”


no bound or hired servant may eat of it.


But the Lord will have compassion on Jacob and will again choose Israel, and will set them in their own land; and aliens will join them and attach themselves to the house of Jacob.


Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel, and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts: I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god.


Assemble yourselves and come together, draw near, you survivors of the nations! They have no knowledge— those who carry about their wooden idols, and keep on praying to a god that cannot save.


Strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, foreigners shall till your land and dress your vines;


O hope of Israel, its savior in time of trouble, why should you be like a stranger in the land, like a traveler turning aside for the night?


O hope of Israel! O Lord! All who forsake you shall be put to shame; those who turn away from you shall be recorded in the underworld, for they have forsaken the fountain of living water, the Lord.


My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and utter lying divinations; they shall not be in the council of my people, nor be enrolled in the register of the house of Israel, nor shall they enter the land of Israel; and you shall know that I am the Lord God.


I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them; and I will bless them and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary among them forevermore.


You shall allot it as an inheritance for yourselves and for the aliens who reside among you and have begotten children among you. They shall be to you as citizens of Israel; with you they shall be allotted an inheritance among the tribes of Israel.


For the Israelites shall remain many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or pillar, without ephod or teraphim.


All the holy offerings that the Israelites present to the Lord I have given to you, together with your sons and daughters, as a perpetual due; it is a covenant of salt forever before the Lord for you and your descendants as well.


Thus he has shown the mercy promised to our ancestors, and has remembered his holy covenant,


I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.


I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing.


You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.


For the promise is for you, for your children, and for all who are far away, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to him.”


For this reason therefore I have asked to see you and speak with you, since it is for the sake of the hope of Israel that I am bound with this chain.”


You are the descendants of the prophets and of the covenant that God gave to your ancestors, saying to Abraham, ‘And in your descendants all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’


This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as descendants.


Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to beings that by nature are not gods.


So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God,


They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of their ignorance and hardness of heart.


And you who were once estranged and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds,


To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.


because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. You have heard of this hope before in the word of the truth, the gospel


But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who have died, so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.


not with lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God;


Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and through grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope,


Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope,


quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight.


so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible that God would prove false, we who have taken refuge might be strongly encouraged to seize the hope set before us.


But Jesus has now obtained a more excellent ministry, and to that degree he is the mediator of a better covenant, which has been enacted through better promises.


Through him you have come to trust in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are set on God.


Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,


but in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be ready to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you;


And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.
