Elijah said to Elisha, ‘Stay here; the Lord has sent me to Bethel.’ But Elisha said, ‘As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.’ So they went down to Bethel.


But those who turn to crooked ways the Lord will banish with the evildoers. Peace be on Israel.


The words of their mouths are wicked and deceitful; they fail to act wisely or do good.


those who turn back from following the Lord and neither seek the Lord nor enquire of him.’


He answered, ‘No, I will not go; I am going back to my own land and my own people.’


As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going further.


And, ‘But my righteous one will live by faith. And I take no pleasure in the one who shrinks back.’


But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.’


Joshua said to the people, ‘You are not able to serve the Lord. He is a holy God; he is a jealous God. He will not forgive your rebellion and your sins.

Will you not take what your god Chemosh gives you? Likewise, whatever the Lord our God has given us, we will possess.


At this they wept aloud again. Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law goodbye, but Ruth clung to her.


But Ruth replied, ‘Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.
