because I rescued the poor who cried for help, and the fatherless who had none to assist them.


if I have raised my hand against the fatherless, knowing that I had influence in court,


defending the fatherless and the oppressed, so that mere earthly mortals will never again strike terror.


and do not show favouritism to a poor person in a lawsuit.


‘Do not deny justice to your poor people in their lawsuits.


Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.


Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.


Your rulers are rebels, partners with thieves; they all love bribes and chase after gifts. They do not defend the cause of the fatherless; the widow’s case does not come before them.


This is what the Lord says to you, house of David: ‘ “Administer justice every morning; rescue from the hand of the oppressor the one who has been robbed, or my wrath will break out and burn like fire because of the evil you have done – burn with no-one to quench it.


He defended the cause of the poor and needy, and so all went well. Is that not what it means to know me?’ declares the Lord.


This is what the Lord says: do what is just and right. Rescue from the hand of the oppressor the one who has been robbed. Do no wrong or violence to the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place.


and have grown fat and sleek. Their evil deeds have no limit; they do not seek justice. They do not promote the case of the fatherless; they do not defend the just cause of the poor.


‘This is what the Lord Almighty said: “Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another.


He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing.


Do not deprive the foreigner or the fatherless of justice, or take the cloak of the widow as a pledge.


Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
