‘Do not lay a hand on the boy,’ he said. ‘Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.’


On the third day, Joseph said to them, ‘Do this and you will live, for I fear God:


I don’t know where the Spirit of the Lord may carry you when I leave you. If I go and tell Ahab and he doesn’t find you, he will kill me. Yet I your servant have worshipped the Lord since my youth.


But the earlier governors – those preceding me – placed a heavy burden on the people and took forty shekels of silver from them in addition to food and wine. Their assistants also lorded it over the people. But out of reverence for God I did not act like that.


His ways are always prosperous; your laws are rejected by him; he sneers at all his enemies.


The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise.


he will bless those who fear the Lord – small and great alike.


Blessed are those whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the Lord.


I have taken an oath and confirmed it, that I will follow your righteous laws.


Your statutes are my heritage for ever; they are the joy of my heart.


Your righteousness is everlasting and your law is true.


Take away the disgrace I dread, for your laws are good.


At midnight I rise to give you thanks for your righteous laws.


I will praise you with an upright heart as I learn your righteous laws.


I know, Lord, that your laws are righteous, and that in faithfulness you have afflicted me.


You, Lord, will keep the needy safe and will protect us for ever from the wicked,


He has revealed his word to Jacob, his laws and decrees to Israel.


I have a message from God in my heart concerning the sinfulness of the wicked: There is no fear of God before their eyes.


Your righteousness is like the highest mountains, your justice like the great deep. You, Lord, preserve both people and animals.


‘These are the laws you are to set before them:


To fear the Lord is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behaviour and perverse speech.


Yes, Lord, walking in the way of your laws, we wait for you; your name and renown are the desire of our hearts.


I have not spoken in secret, from somewhere in a land of darkness; I have not said to Jacob’s descendants, “Seek me in vain.” I, the Lord, speak the truth; I declare what is right.


The men replied, ‘We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to ask you to come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say.’


Consider therefore the kindness and sternness of God: sternness to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that you continue in his kindness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off.


Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth.


And what other nation is so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws as this body of laws I am setting before you today?


and sang the song of God’s servant Moses and of the Lamb: ‘Great and marvellous are your deeds, Lord God Almighty. Just and true are your ways, King of the nations.


And I heard the altar respond: ‘Yes, Lord God Almighty, true and just are your judgments.’


for true and just are his judgments. He has condemned the great prostitute who corrupted the earth by her adulteries. He has avenged on her the blood of his servants.’


But be sure to fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you.
