Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, ‘Abraham!’ ‘Here I am,’ he replied.


He boasts about the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the Lord.


You have searched me, Lord, and you know me.


Though you probe my heart, though you examine me at night and test me, you will find that I have planned no evil; my mouth has not transgressed.


Your hand will lay hold on all your enemies; your right hand will seize your foes.


Test me, Lord, and try me, examine my heart and my mind;


you destroy those who tell lies. The bloodthirsty and deceitful you, Lord, detest.


Bring to an end the violence of the wicked and make the righteous secure – you, the righteous God who probes minds and hearts.


My inheritance has become to me like a lion in the forest. She roars at me; therefore I hate her.


Lord Almighty, you who examine the righteous and probe the heart and mind, let me see your vengeance on them, for to you I have committed my cause.


In one month I got rid of the three shepherds. The flock detested me, and I grew weary of them


This third I will put into the fire; I will refine them like silver and test them like gold. They will call on my name and I will answer them; I will say, “They are my people,” and they will say, “The Lord is our God.” ’


He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then the Lord will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness,


Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.


These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith – of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire – may result in praise, glory and honour when Jesus Christ is revealed.


Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.
