After these things, God tempted Abraham, and said to him: Abraham, Abraham. And he answered: Here I am.


For, lo, the wicked have bent their bow; they have prepared their arrows in the quiver, to shoot in the dark the upright of heart.


Unto the end, a psalm for David.


The Lord is my firmament, my refuge, and my deliverer. My God is my helper, and in him will I put my trust. My protector and the horn of my salvation, and my support.


All they that saw me have laughed me to scorn: they have spoken with the lips, and wagged the head.


Whilst the wicked draw near against me, to eat my flesh. My enemies that trouble me, have themselves been weakened, and have fallen.


Neither shall the wicked dwell near thee: nor shall the unjust abide before thy eyes.


The Lord judgeth the people. Judge me, O Lord, according to my justice, and according to my innocence in me.


My inheritance is become to me as a lion in the wood: is hath cried out against me. Therefore have I hated it.


And thou, O Lord of hosts, prover of the just, who seest the reins and the heart: let me see, I beseech thee, thy vengeance on them, for to thee I have laid open my cause.


And I cut off three shepherds in one month, and my soul was straitened in their regard: for their soul also varied in my regard.


And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined: and I will try them as gold is tried. They shall call on my name, and I will hear them. I will say: Thou art my people: and they shall say: The Lord is my God.


And he shall sit refining and cleansing the silver, and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and shall refine them as gold, and as silver, and they shall offer sacrifices to the Lord in justice.


Blessed is the man that endureth temptation; for when he hath been proved, he shall receive a crown of life, which God hath promised to them that love him.


That the trial of your faith (much more precious than gold which is tried by the fire) may be found unto praise and glory and honour at the appearing of Jesus Christ:


Dearly beloved, think not strange the burning heat which is to try you, as if some new thing happened to you;
