So Joseph settled his father and his brothers in Egypt and gave them property in the best part of the land, the district of Rameses, as Pharaoh directed.


Egypt was glad when they left, because dread of Israel had fallen on them.


So they put slave masters over them to oppress them with forced labour, and they built Pithom and Rameses as store cities for Pharaoh.


‘This month is to be for you the first month, the first month of your year.


The Israelites journeyed from Rameses to Sukkoth. There were about six hundred thousand men on foot, besides women and children.


Today, in the month of Aviv, you are leaving.


The Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, so that he pursued the Israelites, who were marching out boldly.


But you will not leave in haste or go in flight; for the Lord will go before you, the God of Israel will be your rear guard.


The One who breaks open the way will go up before them; they will break through the gate and go out. Their King will pass through before them, the Lord at their head.’
