Numbers 27:21 - New International Version (Anglicised)

21 He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by enquiring of the Urim before the Lord. At his command he and the entire community of the Israelites will go out, and at his command they will come in.’

During the reign of David, there was a famine for three successive years; so David sought the face of the Lord. The Lord said, ‘It is on account of Saul and his blood-stained house; it is because he put the Gibeonites to death.’


The governor ordered them not to eat any of the most sacred food until there was a priest ministering with the Urim and Thummim.

Also put the Urim and the Thummim in the breastpiece, so they may be over Aaron’s heart whenever he enters the presence of the Lord. Thus Aaron will always bear the means of making decisions for the Israelites over his heart before the Lord.

Moses did as the Lord commanded him. He took Joshua and made him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole assembly.


So Moses brought their case before the Lord,


The Lord your God himself will cross over ahead of you. He will destroy these nations before you, and you will take possession of their land. Joshua also will cross over ahead of you, as the Lord said.

When David learned that Saul was plotting against him, he said to Abiathar the priest, ‘Bring the ephod.’


He enquired of the Lord, but the Lord did not answer him by dreams or Urim or prophets.


Then David said to Abiathar the priest, the son of Ahimelek, ‘Bring me the ephod.’ Abiathar brought it to him,
