‘But he stands alone, and who can oppose him? He does whatever he pleases.


Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.


There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan that can succeed against the Lord.


For the Lord Almighty has purposed, and who can thwart him? His hand is stretched out, and who can turn it back?


‘I the Lord do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.


Now come and put a curse on these people, because they are too powerful for me. Perhaps then I will be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land. For I know that whoever you bless is blessed, and whoever you curse is cursed.’


Then Balak said to him, ‘Come with me to another place where you can see them; you will not see them all but only the outskirts of their camp. And from there, curse them for me.’


Balaam answered, ‘Did I not tell you I must do whatever the Lord says?’


And Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor, overlooking the wasteland.
