‘Benjamin is a ravenous wolf; in the morning he devours the prey, in the evening he divides the plunder.’


You are a lion’s cub, Judah; you return from the prey, my son. Like a lion he crouches and lies down, like a lioness – who dares to rouse him?


Twelve lions stood on the six steps, one at either end of each step. Nothing like it had ever been made for any other kingdom.


The throne had six steps, and a footstool of gold was attached to it. On both sides of the seat were armrests, with a lion standing beside each of them.


They are like a lion hungry for prey, like a fierce lion crouching in cover.

This is what the Lord says to me: ‘As a lion growls, a great lion over its prey – and though a whole band of shepherds is called together against it, it is not frightened by their shouts or disturbed by their clamour – so the Lord Almighty will come down to do battle on Mount Zion and on its heights.

The lion has roared – who will not fear? The Sovereign Lord has spoken – who can but prophesy?


Where now is the lions’ den, the place where they fed their young, where the lion and lioness went, and the cubs, with nothing to fear?


The lion killed enough for his cubs and strangled the prey for his mate, filling his lairs with the kill and his dens with the prey.


‘On that day I will make the clans of Judah like a brazier in a woodpile, like a flaming torch among sheaves. They will consume all the surrounding peoples right and left, but Jerusalem will remain intact in her place.
