Early in the morning they left for the Desert of Tekoa. As they set out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, ‘Listen to me, Judah and people of Jerusalem! Have faith in the Lord your God and you will be upheld; have faith in his prophets and you will be successful.’


By the waters of Meribah they angered the Lord, and trouble came to Moses because of them;


Lord our God, you answered them; you were to Israel a forgiving God, though you punished their misdeeds.


The head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is only Remaliah’s son. If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all.” ’


The Lord Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy, he is the one you are to fear, he is the one you are to dread.


I will accept you as fragrant incense when I bring you out from the nations and gather you from the countries where you have been scattered, and I will be proved holy through you in the sight of the nations.


I will show the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, the name you have profaned among them. Then the nations will know that I am the Lord, declares the Sovereign Lord, when I am proved holy through you before their eyes.


‘ “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: on that day thoughts will come into your mind and you will devise an evil scheme.


Moses then said to Aaron, ‘This is what the Lord spoke of when he said: ‘ “Among those who approach me I will be proved holy; in the sight of all the people I will be honoured.” ’ Aaron remained silent.


If this is how you are going to treat me, please go ahead and kill me right now – if I have found favour in your eyes – and do not let me face my own ruin.’


‘Aaron will be gathered to his people. He will not enter the land I give the Israelites, because both of you rebelled against my command at the waters of Meribah.


for when the community rebelled at the waters in the Desert of Zin, both of you disobeyed my command to honour me as holy before their eyes.’ (These were the waters of Meribah Kadesh, in the Desert of Zin.)


‘You unbelieving and perverse generation,’ Jesus replied, ‘how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.’


He replied, ‘Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, “Move from here to there,” and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.’


And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time.’


Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfil his promises to her!’


For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.


Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God,


Because of you the Lord became angry with me also and said, ‘You shall not enter it, either.


Then the Lord said to him, ‘This is the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob when I said, “I will give it to your descendants.” I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross over into it.’


The Lord was angry with me because of you, and he solemnly swore that I would not cross the Jordan and enter the good land the Lord your God is giving you as your inheritance.


‘Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the River Jordan into the land I am about to give to them – to the Israelites.


But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,
