These were the divisions of the gatekeepers who were descendants of Korah and Merari.


In the camp they grew envious of Moses and of Aaron, who was consecrated to the Lord.


So they quarrelled with Moses and said, ‘Give us water to drink.’ Moses replied, ‘Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the Lord to the test?’


Now the people complained about their hardships in the hearing of the Lord, and when he heard them his anger was aroused. Then fire from the Lord burned among them and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp.


Then Moses summoned Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab. But they said, ‘We will not come!


They came as a group to oppose Moses and Aaron and said to them, ‘You have gone too far! The whole community is holy, every one of them, and the Lord is with them. Why then do you set yourselves above the Lord’s assembly?’


‘Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; but whoever rejects me rejects him who sent me.’


Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.’


Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.’


Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.


And do not grumble, as some of them did – and were killed by the destroying angel.


What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe – as the Lord has assigned to each his task.


These people are grumblers and fault-finders; they follow their own evil desires; they boast about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage.


And the Lord told him: ‘Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king.
