Jeremiah composed laments for Josiah, and to this day all the male and female singers commemorate Josiah in the laments. These became a tradition in Israel and are written in the Laments.


‘Both high and low will die in this land. They will not be buried or mourned, and no-one will cut themselves or shave their head for the dead.


Groan quietly; do not mourn for the dead. Keep your turban fastened and your sandals on your feet; do not cover your moustache and beard or eat the customary food of mourners.’


‘ “We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.”


They are like children sitting in the market-place and calling out to each other: ‘ “We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not cry.”
