The Lord, the Lord Almighty, called you on that day to weep and to wail, to tear out your hair and put on sackcloth.


Then John’s disciples came and asked him, ‘How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?’


‘No-one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse.


Jesus answered, ‘How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? They cannot, so long as they have him with them.


But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and on that day they will fast.


Then he said to his disciples, ‘The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it.


Jesus answered, ‘Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while he is with them?


But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; in those days they will fast.’


Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things.


The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete.


Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they had put their trust.
