At noon Elijah began to taunt them. ‘Shout louder!’ he said. ‘Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or travelling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.’


You who are young, be happy while you are young, and let your heart give you joy in the days of your youth. Follow the ways of your heart and whatever your eyes see, but know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.


He replied, ‘Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, “The Teacher says: my appointed time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.” ’


‘As you know, the Passover is two days away – and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.’


So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.


Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!’


Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him.


Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour – when darkness reigns.’


Jesus replied, ‘The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.


‘Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? “Father, save me from this hour”? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour.


It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.


After Jesus said this, he looked towards heaven and prayed: ‘Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.
