And though a tenth remains in the land, it will again be laid waste. But as the terebinth and oak leave stumps when they are cut down, so the holy seed will be the stump in the land.’


In the whole land,’ declares the Lord, ‘two-thirds will be struck down and perish; yet one-third will be left in it.


I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem to fight against it; the city will be captured, the houses ransacked, and the women raped. Half of the city will go into exile, but the rest of the people will not be taken from the city.


‘For many are invited, but few are chosen.’


For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.


And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.


‘If the Lord had not cut short those days, no-one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened them.


And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off?


Yet, before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad – in order that God’s purpose in election might stand:


Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.
