The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.


One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question:


Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, ‘Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?’


Later they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to Jesus to catch him in his words.


Should we pay or shouldn’t we?’ But Jesus knew their hypocrisy. ‘Why are you trying to trap me?’ he asked. ‘Bring me a denarius and let me look at it.’


They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger.


To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): a wife must not separate from her husband.


where your ancestors tested and tried me, though for forty years they saw what I did.
