I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies,


The king answered, ‘I will do whatever seems best to you.’ So the king stood beside the gate while all his men marched out in units of hundreds and of thousands.


Have the gates of death been shown to you? Have you seen the gates of the deepest darkness?


They loathed all food and drew near the gates of death.


Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court.


‘they have greatly oppressed me from my youth, but they have not gained the victory over me.


Those who sit at the gate mock me, and I am the song of the drunkards.


Lord, see how my enemies persecute me! Have mercy and lift me up from the gates of death,


Wisdom is too high for fools; in the assembly at the gate they must not open their mouths.

This is a profound mystery – but I am talking about Christ and the church.

if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.


(If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?)


Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe,
