Mark 12:1 - New International Version (Anglicised)

1 Jesus then began to speak to them in parables: ‘A man planted a vineyard. He put a wall round it, dug a pit for the winepress and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and moved to another place.

In that day, in every place where there were a thousand vines worth a thousand silver shekels, there will be only briers and thorns.


I had planted you like a choice vine of sound and reliable stock. How then did you turn against me into a corrupt, wild vine?


Then I said, ‘Sovereign Lord, they are saying of me, “Isn’t he just telling parables?” ’


Then he told them many things in parables, saying: ‘A farmer went out to sow his seed.


‘What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, “Son, go and work today in the vineyard.”


‘Listen to another parable: there was a landowner who planted a vineyard. He put a wall round it, dug a winepress in it and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and moved to another place.


When the harvest time approached, he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his fruit.


‘Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them.


So they answered Jesus, ‘We don’t know.’ Jesus said, ‘Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.’


It’s like a man going away: he leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch.


So Jesus called them over to him and began to speak to them in parables: ‘How can Satan drive out Satan?


He taught them many things by parables, and in his teaching said:


‘Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living.


He said: ‘A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return.


‘Where do you want us to prepare for it?’ they asked.


He said, ‘The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so that, ‘ “though seeing, they may not see; though hearing, they may not understand.”


He was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors; and he received living words to pass on to us.
