Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High,


and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.’


And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.’


The sceptre will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he to whom it belongs shall come and the obedience of the nations shall be his.


The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone;


So this is what the Sovereign Lord says: ‘See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic.


See, my servant will act wisely; he will be raised and lifted up and highly exalted.


Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.


For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.


‘The days are coming,’ declares the Lord, ‘when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land.


‘ “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will fulfil the good promise I made to the people of Israel and Judah.


‘ “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I myself will take a shoot from the very top of a cedar and plant it; I will break off a tender sprig from its topmost shoots and plant it on a high and lofty mountain.


I will place over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he will tend them; he will tend them and be their shepherd.


‘In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure for ever.


‘In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence.


Afterwards the Israelites will return and seek the Lord their God and David their king. They will come trembling to the Lord and to his blessings in the last days.


‘In that day ‘I will restore David’s fallen shelter – I will repair its broken walls and restore its ruins – and will rebuild it as it used to be,


‘And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son.


‘Awake, sword, against my shepherd, against the man who is close to me!’ declares the Lord Almighty. ‘Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered, and I will turn my hand against the little ones.


On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half of the mountain moving north and half moving south.


Tell him this is what the Lord Almighty says: “Here is the man whose name is the Branch, and he will branch out from his place and build the temple of the Lord.


Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.


The Lord said to Moses, ‘Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.’


The assembly must protect the one accused of murder from the avenger of blood and send the accused back to the city of refuge to which they fled. The accused must stay there until the death of the high priest, who was anointed with holy oil.


All this took place to fulfil what the Lord had said through the prophet:


From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.


But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?’


But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.’ Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.


because he was teaching his disciples. He said to them, ‘The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after three days he will rise.’


For this is the time of punishment in fulfilment of all that has been written.


It is written: “And he was numbered with the transgressors”; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfilment.’


He told them, ‘This is what is written: the Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,


And he said, ‘The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.’


‘Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: the Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.’


Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,


You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me,


If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.


he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus. As it is written in the second Psalm: ‘ “You are my son; today I have become your father.”


Take care that what the prophets have said does not happen to you:


because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, you will not let your holy one see decay.


But this is how God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, saying that his Messiah would suffer.


‘This is the Moses who told the Israelites, “God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your own people.”


The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming – not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship.


‘Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s house,’ bearing witness to what would be spoken by God in the future.


This Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High. He met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings and blessed him,


The Holy Spirit was showing by this that the way into the Most Holy Place had not yet been disclosed as long as the first tabernacle was still functioning.


trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of the Messiah and the glories that would follow.


At this I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, ‘Don’t do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers and sisters who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For it is the Spirit of prophecy who bears testimony to Jesus.’
