‘ “We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.”


Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs.


Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph, and Salome.


Jesus turned and said to them, ‘Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children.


The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it.


and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out;


Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning for her. ‘Stop wailing,’ Jesus said. ‘She is not dead but asleep.’


Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.
