Let’s get our father to drink wine and then sleep with him and preserve our family line through our father.’


So they got their father to drink wine that night also, and the younger daughter went in and slept with him. Again he was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.


So he went and got them and brought them to his mother, and she prepared some tasty food, just the way his father liked it.


may ruin overtake them by surprise – may the net they hid entangle them, may they fall into the pit, to their ruin.


Haughty eyes and a proud heart – the unploughed field of the wicked – produce sin.


do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat,


Moreover, no-one knows when their hour will come: As fish are caught in a cruel net, or birds are taken in a snare, so people are trapped by evil times that fall unexpectedly upon them.


And these also stagger from wine and reel from beer: priests and prophets stagger from beer and are befuddled with wine; they reel from beer, they stagger when seeing visions, they stumble when rendering decisions.

The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful.

The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature.


But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.


See to it that no-one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.


But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.


So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.


Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you.
