One person pretends to be rich, yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth.


You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.’


Jesus answered, ‘If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.’


But now as for what is inside you – be generous to the poor, and everything will be clean for you.


‘This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich towards God.’


I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.


When Jesus heard this, he said to him, ‘You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.’


He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.


They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.


In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity.
