The Lord appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day.


Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground.


When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, ‘Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.’


Jacob looked up and there was Esau, coming with his four hundred men; so he divided the children among Leah, Rachel and the two female servants.


Then Esau looked up and saw the women and children. ‘Who are these with you?’ he asked. Jacob answered, ‘They are the children God has graciously given your servant.’


Day after day men came to help David, until he had a great army, like the army of God.


Then the Lord spoke to the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath.


But David could not go before it to enquire of God, because he was afraid of the sword of the angel of the Lord.

and among the lampstands was someone like a son of man, dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash round his chest.


Manoah got up and followed his wife. When he came to the man, he said, ‘Are you the man who talked to my wife?’ ‘I am,’ he said.


‘We are doomed to die!’ he said to his wife. ‘We have seen God!’
