When the time drew near for Israel to die, he called for his son Joseph and said to him, ‘If I have found favour in your eyes, put your hand under my thigh and promise that you will show me kindness and faithfulness. Do not bury me in Egypt,


he sent messengers to them to say to them, ‘The Lord bless you for showing this kindness to Saul your master by burying him.


May the Lord now show you kindness and faithfulness, and I too will show you the same favour because you have done this.


David asked, ‘Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan’s sake?’


As the king passed by, the prophet called out to him, ‘Your servant went into the thick of the battle, and someone came to me with a captive and said, “Guard this man. If he is missing, it will be your life for his life, or you must pay a talent of silver.”

But Joshua spared Rahab the prostitute, with her family and all who belonged to her, because she hid the men Joshua had sent as spies to Jericho – and she lives among the Israelites to this day.


As for you, show kindness to your servant, for you have brought him into a covenant with you before the Lord. If I am guilty, then kill me yourself! Why hand me over to your father?’
