Here is the account of the forced labour King Solomon conscripted to build the Lord’s temple, his own palace, the terraces, the wall of Jerusalem, and Hazor, Megiddo and Gezer.


(Pharaoh king of Egypt had attacked and captured Gezer. He had set it on fire. He killed its Canaanite inhabitants and then gave it as a wedding gift to his daughter, Solomon’s wife.


Solomon conscripted the descendants of all these peoples remaining in the land – whom the Israelites could not exterminate – to serve as slave labour, as it is to this day.

Meanwhile, Horam king of Gezer had come up to help Lachish, but Joshua defeated him and his army – until no survivors were left.


Judah could not dislodge the Jebusites, who were living in Jerusalem; to this day the Jebusites live there with the people of Judah.


It also included all the towns and their villages that were set aside for the Ephraimites within the inheritance of the Manassites.


Yet the Manassites were not able to occupy these towns, for the Canaanites were determined to live in that region.


However, when the Israelites grew stronger, they subjected the Canaanites to forced labour but did not drive them out completely.


Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer, but the Canaanites continued to live there among them.
