Evildoers do not understand what is right, but those who seek the Lord understand it fully.


They know nothing, they understand nothing; their eyes are plastered over so that they cannot see, and their minds closed so that they cannot understand.


He said, ‘Go and tell this people: ‘ “Be ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving.”


To whom can I speak and give warning? Who will listen to me? Their ears are closed so that they cannot hear. The word of the Lord is offensive to them; they find no pleasure in it.


Who is wise? Let them realise these things. Who is discerning? Let them understand. The ways of the Lord are right; the righteous walk in them, but the rebellious stumble in them.


But they do not know the thoughts of the Lord; they do not understand his plan, that he has gathered them like sheaves to the threshing-floor.


For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.”


Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live.


I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him.


On hearing it, many of his disciples said, ‘This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?’


Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.


They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father.


They answered him, ‘We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?’


‘Abraham is our father,’ they answered. ‘If you were Abraham’s children,’ said Jesus, ‘then you would do what Abraham did.


‘You stiff-necked people! Your hearts and ears are still uncircumcised. You are just like your ancestors: you always resist the Holy Spirit!
