Jehu said, ‘Call an assembly in honour of Baal.’ So they proclaimed it.


All the men of Judah, with their wives and children and little ones, stood there before the Lord.


Day after day, from the first day to the last, Ezra read from the Book of the Law of God. They celebrated the festival for seven days, and on the eighth day, in accordance with the regulation, there was an assembly.


‘Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my attendants will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.’


‘Judah mourns, her cities languish; they wail for the land, and a cry goes up from Jerusalem.


In the ninth month of the fifth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, a time of fasting before the Lord was proclaimed for all the people in Jerusalem and those who had come from the towns of Judah.

For seven days present food offerings to the Lord, and on the eighth day hold a sacred assembly and present a food offering to the Lord. It is the closing special assembly; do not do any of your ordinary work.


The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.


But let people and animals be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence.
