For your hands are stained with blood, your fingers with guilt. Your lips have spoken falsely, and your tongue mutters wicked things.


You are always righteous, Lord, when I bring a case before you. Yet I would speak with you about your justice: why does the way of the wicked prosper? Why do all the faithless live at ease?


Your relatives, members of your own family – even they have betrayed you; they have raised a loud cry against you. Do not trust them, though they speak well of you.


And if you ask yourself, ‘Why has this happened to me?’ – it is because of your many sins that your skirts have been torn off and your body ill-treated.


The land is full of adulterers; because of the curse the land lies parched and the pastures in the wilderness are withered. The prophets follow an evil course and use their power unjustly.


‘My people are fools; they do not know me. They are senseless children; they have no understanding. They are skilled in doing evil; they know not how to do good.’


‘Go up and down the streets of Jerusalem, look around and consider, search through her squares. If you can find but one person who deals honestly and seeks the truth, I will forgive this city.


The people of Israel and the people of Judah have been utterly unfaithful to me,’ declares the Lord.


Although they say, “As surely as the Lord lives,” still they are swearing falsely.’


There is only cursing, lying and murder, stealing and adultery; they break all bounds, and bloodshed follows bloodshed.


They are unfaithful to the Lord; they give birth to illegitimate children. When they celebrate their New Moon feasts, he will devour their fields.


As at Adam, they have broken the covenant; they were unfaithful to me there.


They are all adulterers, burning like an oven whose fire the baker need not stir from the kneading of the dough till it rises.


Your rich people are violent; your inhabitants are liars and their tongues speak deceitfully.


Her prophets are unprincipled; they are treacherous people. Her priests profane the sanctuary and do violence to the law.


Judah has been unfaithful. A detestable thing has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem: Judah has desecrated the sanctuary the Lord loves by marrying women who worship a foreign god.


You ask, ‘Why?’ It is because the Lord is the witness between you and the wife of your youth. You have been unfaithful to her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant.


You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.


After that whole generation had been gathered to their ancestors, another generation grew up who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel.
