Hear me, you heavens! Listen, earth! For the Lord has spoken: ‘I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me.


Be stunned and amazed, blind yourselves and be sightless; be drunk, but not from wine, stagger, but not from beer.


Therefore this is what the Lord says: ‘Enquire among the nations: who has ever heard anything like this? A most horrible thing has been done by Virgin Israel.


O land, land, land, hear the word of the Lord!


I looked at the earth, and it was formless and empty; and at the heavens, and their light was gone.


Hear, you earth: I am bringing disaster on this people, the fruit of their schemes, because they have not listened to my words and have rejected my law.


‘Hear, you mountains, the Lord’s accusation; listen, you everlasting foundations of the earth. For the Lord has a case against his people; he is lodging a charge against Israel.


From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land.
