In Egypt, Manasseh and Ephraim were born to Joseph by Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On.


Some time later Joseph was told, ‘Your father is ill.’ So he took his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim along with him.


Any children born to you after them will be yours; in the territory they inherit they will be reckoned under the names of their brothers.


The waters saw you, God, the waters saw you and writhed; the very depths were convulsed.


But now, this is what the Lord says – he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: ‘Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.


‘ “Later I passed by, and when I looked at you and saw that you were old enough for love, I spread the corner of my garment over you and covered your naked body. I gave you my solemn oath and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Sovereign Lord, and you became mine.


This is what the Sovereign Lord says: ‘These are the boundaries of the land that you will divide among the twelve tribes of Israel as their inheritance, with two portions for Joseph.


You are to be holy to me because I, the Lord, am holy, and I have set you apart from the nations to be my own.


‘On the day when I act,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘they will be my treasured possession. I will spare them, just as a father has compassion and spares his son who serves him.


from the sons of Joseph: from Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud; from Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur;


And, ‘I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.’
