But Abram said, ‘Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?’


Then the word of the Lord came to him: ‘This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.’


God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, ‘What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there.


Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, ‘Abraham!’ ‘Here I am,’ he replied.


Some time later Abraham was told, ‘Milkah is also a mother; she has borne sons to your brother Nahor:


That night the Lord appeared to him and said, ‘I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham.’

Look on our shield, O God; look with favour on your anointed one.


He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.


Moses answered the people, ‘Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again.


A wicked person earns deceptive wages, but the one who sows righteousness reaps a sure reward.

‘I, even I, am he who comforts you. Who are you that you fear mere mortals, human beings who are but grass,

I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.’


In my thirtieth year, in the fourth month on the fifth day, while I was among the exiles by the River Kebar, the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God.


The Spirit lifted me up and brought me to the exiles in Babylonia in the vision given by the Spirit of God. Then the vision I had seen went up from me,


He then said to me: ‘Son of man, go now to the people of Israel and speak my words to them.

The angel said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.


He replied, ‘You of little faith, why are you so afraid?’ Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.


But the angel said to him: ‘Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John.

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.’


In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways,


When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: ‘Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last.


May the Lord repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.’


Then the word of the Lord came to Samuel:
