Then the man said, ‘Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.’


the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favour in the eyes of the prison warder.


And forgive your people, who have sinned against you; forgive all the offences they have committed against you, and cause their captors to show them mercy;


Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favour in the presence of this man.’ I was cupbearer to the king.


The king said to me, ‘What is it you want?’ Then I prayed to the God of heaven,


She pleased him and won his favour. Immediately he provided her with her beauty treatments and special food. He assigned to her seven female attendants selected from the king’s palace and moved her and her attendants into the best place in the harem.


He saves the needy from the sword in their mouth; he saves them from the clutches of the powerful.


So the poor have hope, and injustice shuts its mouth.


He caused all who held them captive to show them mercy.


Know that the Lord has set apart his faithful servant for himself; the Lord hears when I call to him.


When the Lord takes pleasure in anyone’s way, he causes their enemies to make peace with them.


but the official told Daniel, ‘I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your food and drink. Why should he see you looking worse than the other young men of your age? The king would then have my head because of you.’


and rescued him from all his troubles. He gave Joseph wisdom and enabled him to gain the goodwill of Pharaoh king of Egypt. So Pharaoh made him ruler over Egypt and all his palace.
