The Lord had said to Abram, ‘Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.


He also said to him, ‘I am the Lord, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to take possession of it.’


And when God caused me to wander from my father’s household, I said to her, “This is how you can show your love to me: everywhere we go, say of me, ‘He is my brother.’ ” ’


You found his heart faithful to you, and you made a covenant with him to give to his descendants the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Jebusites and Girgashites. You have kept your promise because you are righteous.


‘Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.


In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.


‘So he left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Harran. After the death of his father, God sent him to this land where you are now living.


Therefore, ‘Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.’


By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.


But I took your father Abraham from the land beyond the Euphrates and led him throughout Canaan and gave him many descendants. I gave him Isaac,
