1 Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul.

As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross.


In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar – when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene –


This they did, sending their gift to the elders by Barnabas and Saul.


When Barnabas and Saul had finished their mission, they returned from Jerusalem, taking with them John, also called Mark.


Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked straight at Elymas and said,


Judas and Silas, who themselves were prophets, said much to encourage and strengthen the believers.


But Paul and Barnabas remained in Antioch, where they and many others taught and preached the word of the Lord.


When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.


He had four unmarried daughters who prophesied.


Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means ‘son of encouragement’),


Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples. He went to the high priest


Timothy, my co-worker, sends his greetings to you, as do Lucius, Jason and Sosipater, my fellow Jews.


Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonours his head.


If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.


Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.


Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said.

The other Jews joined him in his hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy even Barnabas was led astray.


James, Cephas and John, those esteemed as pillars, gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship when they recognised the grace given to me. They agreed that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the circumcised.


So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers,


All God’s people here send you greetings, especially those who belong to Caesar’s household.
