‘No!’ he said to them. ‘You have come to see where our land is unprotected.’


Send one of your number to get your brother; the rest of you will be kept in prison, so that your words may be tested to see if you are telling the truth. If you are not, then as surely as Pharaoh lives, you are spies!’


Then he remembered his dreams about them and said to them, ‘You are spies! You have come to see where our land is unprotected.’


the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun their lord, ‘Do you think David is honouring your father by sending envoys to you to express sympathy? Hasn’t David sent them to you only to explore the city and spy it out and overthrow it?’


So Joab went to the king and said, ‘What have you done? Look, Abner came to you. Why did you let him go? Now he is gone!


Joab then left David and sent messengers after Abner, and they brought him back from the cistern at Sirah. But David did not know it.


Now when Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into an inner chamber, as if to speak with him privately. And there, to avenge the blood of his brother Asahel, Joab stabbed him in the stomach, and he died.


until I come and take you to a land like your own – a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive trees and honey. Choose life and not death! ‘Do not listen to Hezekiah, for he is misleading you when he says, “The Lord will deliver us.”

‘You mean he has deceived you also?’ the Pharisees retorted.


You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.


You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out.
