‘No, my son,’ the king replied. ‘All of us should not go; we would only be a burden to you.’ Although Absalom urged him, he still refused to go but gave him his blessing.


But Absalom urged him, so he sent with him Amnon and the rest of the king’s sons.


Joab said to Amasa, ‘How are you, my brother?’ Then Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him.


Now when Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into an inner chamber, as if to speak with him privately. And there, to avenge the blood of his brother Asahel, Joab stabbed him in the stomach, and he died.


His talk is smooth as butter, yet war is in his heart; his words are more soothing than oil, yet they are drawn swords.


Enemies disguise themselves with their lips, but in their hearts they harbour deceit.
