Laziness brings on deep sleep, and the shiftless go hungry.


The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful.


‘About nine in the morning he went out and saw others standing in the market-place doing nothing.


About five in the afternoon he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, “Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?”


‘His master replied, “You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed?


He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.


Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.


but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts.


Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervour, serving the Lord.


Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labour in the Lord is not in vain.


Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realise that Christ Jesus is in you – unless, of course, you fail the test?


In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity.


But since you excel in everything – in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you – see that you also excel in this grace of giving.


And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you.


And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight,


In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:


What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ


so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God,


rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.


Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.


May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you.


As for other matters, brothers and sisters, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more.


We ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters, and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love all of you have for one another is increasing.


Besides, they get into the habit of being idle and going about from house to house. And not only do they become idlers, but also busybodies who talk nonsense, saying things they ought not to.


Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, in order to provide for urgent needs and not live unproductive lives.


I pray that your partnership with us in the faith may be effective in deepening your understanding of every good thing we share for the sake of Christ.


We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.


Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.


His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.


If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning.


But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever! Amen.
